The Academy / update on new bird and life.
« Last post by Dartman on May 06, 2013, 02:03:41 AM »
Well it's been quite a long time since we got newbie, over 3 years now, and he mostly likes us now and wants to fly to our arms and shoulders to hang out. Finally decided on a name for him a while ago, he's big and green and runs over when we ring the bell on his perch so we call him Lurch like the butler in the Adams Family from the old TV show and movies.
He's settled in nicely and loves to fly and land on our shoulders or hang out with me on my recliner to get scritches and steal food if I'm eating. He loves the new house and flies all over reaping havoc and bouncing off the lights and ceiling as it's much higher and bigger then our old place.
Been slowly loading the mini barn/shed and have the floor mostly cleared out in the middle and the loft partially filled with the crap we want to keep but don't use or need much. Also slowly clearing out and organizing the main living areas and rooms of boxes and junk but it's hard to believe we got all the crap we still have in that tiny house before after seeing it spread out all over now in the new place. The fence is great and all the extra cars and crap are parked behind it and locked away and pretty much unable to be seen from outside. We sold sisters 71 Plymouth Scamp to pay the taxes we owed from buying the house with the extra income we got from partially cashing in our IRA's, plus I sold a few rare parts to the same guy, got 1500 for the car and the extra parts I saved for it, plus my stuff for 750 so all paid off on taxes and one less car in the yard.
The neighbors on either side of us are nice and we get along fine with them so life's good. Water bills here are stupid high due to the city being greedy and adding on non water related crap and the sewer bill with it so been 300 and 276 for every 3 months bill so far, everything else including the mortgage has been reasonable for what we have and can probably get a payment reduction on the water bill for proving we aren't rich and need the help when we jump through the right hoops.
Family bought us a new Sony LED 42" TV for Christmas for our new house and it surprisingly looks really good black level and over all pop wise considering the MEH tech it uses so enjoying that. I guess I can post some pics if there are any requests and it's slowly feeling more like home and getting settled in and sorted.

So... I have been riding a lot lately and I was wondering what ride tracking apps everyone uses?

I have been using Strava for running and riding.

AHH, I understand better now, I haven't enabled that function on here as I want this thing to sleep and save power when I'm not in here doing something, and turn on when WMC tells my HD HomeRun prime to record a show for me. I might have to try enabling it sometime and see if it just lets this thing wake up any time I fire up the media players out front to watch something I've captured, rather then having to come in here and wake it up if it's not busy already. when it's sleeping it only draws a watt :)

WOL is an abbreviation for wake on lan. In short, you enable NICs to listen to 'magic packets', which when broadcast in your LAN will bring a machine out of hibernate.

Well a fully wired connection shouldn't have any issues as long as everything is right so not surprised but I also am not sure exactly what WOL is but probably just not getting the abbreviation right now and it seems it's some kind of wireless to your printer so figured I'd throw that out there just in case. Seeing how there are so many different wireless protocols and frequencies in use it might be something affecting you.
I use wireless to my Tablet and that about it, everything else here is on gig wired, and a few years ago I had never setup a network so pretty happy everything actually works and some day I'll have to actually run wires under MY  :) house and setup proper jacks and things when I feel like it and get some decent network cable and tools.

Thanks Dartman,

What I forgot to mention, is my desktop using the same version of Lights-Out works flawlessly (its wired)

This may have nothing to do with your issues at all BUT here in Oregon the local power company started using smart RF meters for the houses here that they can access remotely by a receiver in their trucks as it drives by. It also started messing with some of the local cell phone providers who apparently used a frequency very close to the one they were using for the new meters. It also seems that my Bluetooth Logitech keyboard and mouse started having troubles working reliably since the upgrade, even though it has never been that great it's even worse now so is it possible that your power company or somebody else providing utility service there has started using some sort of RF smart meter system?
Of course it could also be any number of driver or other issues but this is something to check out just in case it's a similar issue for you if nothing else seems broken.

Networking / WOL from wireless to wired

Hey all,

Long time no post.

Something strange has started happening with my setup. I did have WOL from my Macbook Air to my HP N40L working reliably - and it was great. However, in the last few weeks its decided to not play nicely. I'm using the WHS2011 addon Lights-Out as the agent and my router is a Netgear DGN2200.

I've read in some places that WOL from a wireless to wired device can sometimes be hit and miss. The thing is, it was working flawlessly until a few weeks ago.

In short, HALP!
