Chris wants a Video camera
« on: December 20, 2009, 10:10:33 PM »
So like..Christmas is coming..and my christmas list is empty.

So I thinks to myself I thinks...What do I want?

Then I've been on youtube all day and I figure a camera would come in handy. Can anyone suggest a decent video camera for under the $400ish mark? Is that a reasonable price range?

Obviously I don't want to shoot feature films, just capture memories and the like.

Discuss.

Upgrade to a 500D

Just throwing it out there...

Otherwise, the SDHC based 1080p cams are getting cheap.

My 500D shoots pretty nice video. 30fps 720 or 20fps 1080.

Although the 500D probably does shoot nice video, its outta budget and also not that portable as the compact videos and i'd guess would have a small zoom

Like JJJ said, there are some pretty nice video cameras around

Zooms as much as whatever lens you have attached...
Upgrading to a 500D isn't as silly as it sounds..
Sell the 400D body, grab a 500D body for only a few hundred more. Use the lenses that you currently own. Suck less at life.

How is the audio quality on the 500D RD?  You can't use external mics right?

I imagine 720p footage from a 500D & 50/1.8 would be pretty lovely.

Audio is alright, if you were serious about it you'd record seperately and mix it in later.

720p with a fifty is pretty nice actually.

What about a Panasonic TZ7. Compact super-zoom point and shoot with a pretty impressive video offering. Above you're budget though

Really that budget's as high as I want to go. I'm not keen enough that I want something awesome... I just want to get by, and want something to play with. If I get serious I'll spend more.

There's a Sanyo HD Camcorder up on COTD today for $258.  Might be worth considering if you haven't bought one yet.

550D would be a great upgrade given the improved framerate and external mic input. Being touted as a 7D for the average Joe.
