Acer notebook mobo.
« on: July 12, 2009, 11:03:01 AM »
I have here an Acer Aspire 5630 WLMi series notebook that has a borked gfx. Symptoms are corrupting display after it has been on for a few minutes. So far tested with linux and windows live cds and the problem is exactly the same as when in the installed windows. Also happens at the bios screen. Also tried with an external monitor and the symptoms reproduce on the external display.
So looks like it needs a new mainboard.
Mainboard is an HBLA50 LA6 with onboard Nvidia 7300 go gfx, part number MBAXY02005.
I thought EMPR did Acer but I must have mistaken that for ASUS which they do(plus toshy and hp).
So anyone got some contacts for where I could source a new or refurbished mobo in Australia?
It is out of warranty by about 3 months otherwise it would be a warranty return. :-(
Specs are half decent and it has not had a lot of use (keyboard even looks brand new still).

I wouldn't employ the management of Telstra to run a length of string between two jam tins.

Look up the Acer service agents on their website.. There's one in Launceston and one down here. Won't be cheap though.

Might be worthwhile getting someone experienced in uBGA rework to reflow the board. If only there was someone in Tasmania on SPL who could do such a thing >_>

Best I can find on Acer's site is
http://helpdesk.acer.com.au/index.php?_cust=apr. Already contacted 2 on that list, one says part out of stock and no idea when they will be available, the other said they do not do Acer parts and haven't for some time.
No response yet from

The above offer is still valid, if you want to risk it. No guarantees, and you're responsible for getting it to/from me. :P

Oh had no idea who you meant RD. Even had to google reflow.
I take it you have done this before and you think the issue is bad solder on the GPU?
Will talk to the owner on Tuesday with the warnings and see what he says.
Thanks for the offer too.
Oh and quite happy to recompense you for the work.

It's a possibility. I work with surface mount technology every day.
Given the board is effectively cactus now, certainly can't really do much harm apart from kill it.
Reflowing has it's risks.

Ok just an update. Owner is not interested even though I told him no work no fee. Wants a new board with warranty.

Ye but the buggers want invoice proof of purchase and god knows what else.
Also tried creating a support account at Acer but when clicking on spares the sods then just take you to their authorised repair centre list.
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fuckers.
