Very fucking ordinary.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't buy the Jaycar amp again, instead I'd look more seriously at building a GainClone or similar.
However, having said that, in prebuilt amps - you don't get much amp for under $500ish - I think this is about as good as it gets for $200... especially when it's only really used for playing MP3s anyhow.
I'll keep it even if I supersede it with something better down the track - if nothing else it'll work alright powering kitchen/bathroom/outdoor (bbq area) speakers, where sound quality isn't a major concern.

An interesting development....

I went in to the workshop today (ie where they do the work on electric cars... and have NC machines etc) and mentioned that I was looking for a toroidal transformer.  They said they make their own, and told me not to be a pussy and gave me a coil...

I'm still not sure if I'll girl out and buy a toroid or not.  Maybe I'll make my own next time around.

Minor update today.... Slobbered up the rectifier boards.

It probably could have been a bit neater... but meh, cheapo 25w iron + fat lead free solder is a bit tricky.

Trick with Pb-free is to use additional flux, and a smidge more heat.

Lifted pads are why you find a old school telephone wire sheaf with the hundreds of single strand copper insulated wires inside. Best stuff ever for repairing a lift ;) I have a 4 foot section of it I found while in high school back in the day, still comes in handy for those botched or all ready damaged boards. Soldering looks mostly OK, a few pads on the ends look a bit cold maybe.

oooh, what an exciting project :)
And BTW, that soldering looks great, esp in comparison to my efforts. One of my first jobs resulted in 3 lifted pads and one broken off completely...... yeah
:) ;) :D ;D >:( =<:):( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :angel: :police: =:( =:D  =:) =:P =;)

lead free soldering tends to look a bit cold, no lead to make it shiny...

K, then I spose it's all fine then,I've used both types and I mostly end up with nice joints but it is way easier with the micro solder I tend to use. I also have a bunch of the old school weller solder I've found and that stuff is so nice, even if it's full of lead and other nasties.

Me initially, when I first looked at the title.

"Hrrrrm. What is JJJ up to today? Oh. Chimp Amp. Hrrrm. Good man that JJJ. Always thinking of the chimps. Hell of an environmental activi...

...wait...what...?"

At this point, I read the thread.
